Description
This book is the first to take an in-depth look at the many gorgeous hybrids that have been made by combining Vanda species and hybrids with other related genera in the Sarcanthinae subtribe, which includes Aerides, Arachnis, Ascocentrum, Neofinetia, Paraphalaenopsis, Phalaenopsis, Renanthera, Rhynchostylis, and Vandopsis, as well as Vanda, and provides detailed information on how to grow these magnificent plants.

The book is divided into two main sections. Part One traces the evolution of today's Vanda and Ascocenda hybrids, and examines the combinations of these with other genera. The first section also includes a discussion of the role of chromosomes and genes in the transmission of traits, and the flower quality standards used by orchid judges. Because the genus Ascocentrum has been the most frequent and popular partner in intergeneric combinations with vandas, this genus and the resulting hybrid genus Ascocenda are given separate and more extensive coverage.

Part Two provides a detailed reference manual for plant selection, environmental requirements, and successful cultivation. Included in the book and of particular interest to readers not well versed in the peculiarities of orchid classification and nomenclature is "A Guide to Orchid Classification and Nomenclature" in Appendix A.
